ACA woes?  Hospitals and Docs feel it too!

Life since the Affordable Care Act is an interesting environment.  Everything is changing at such a rapid pace, no one knows how to keep up.  Hospitals are in the same boat, too! In a recent study, 75% of hospitals have reported an increase of emergency room traffic since the ACA started.  Not only that, but there’s a huge increase in the number of people in Medicaid (in CA it’s Medi-Cal).   BUT doctors don’t want to take new Medicaid patients because

Weight for it . . .

Up until recently, I was really into weightlifting.  I used these guidelines in my weight training, and still use these mantras every day – no matter what I’m doing.  Here are the motivations (and inspirations) my trainer taught me.   Breathing Strength / Power Flexibility Endurance Coordination Flow Precision You cannot have strength without flexibility.  You cannot have power without taking deep breaths.  You cannot reach a goal without endurance, flexibility, and flow.  And it takes precision to be clear

Can you measure the value of time?

Tim Wiholt, an insurance broker from Nashville, wrote this lovely LinkedIn post.  I adored it!  I just had to share his sentiments. Life by the numbers . . . the average person lives to be about 80.  We spend roughly the first 20 years learning, the last 20 retiring, and the 40 in the middle ‘making a life.’ His message?  We all have the same amount of time on this little planet.   Make those precious minutes for the time in

Good news for the ladies!!

Hurray! On 5/11/15, the Department of Health and Human Services (ObamaCare)  told insurance companies they HAVE to give ladies access to  ALL federally approved methods of birth control.  NO EXCEPTIONS! Women’s groups have been reporting that IUD’s, Plan B, the patch, and the ring have been refused by many insurance companies.  According to the White House, this is breaking the law. Another positive step in the enforcement of some good bits of the Affordable Care Act. https://www.ibamag.com/news/white-house-cracks-down-on-insurers-flouting-birth-control-requirements-22455.aspx

Open Enrollment is Over!  Let’s Have Some Laughs!

One of the rules of the Affordable Care Act (aka ObamaCare) means that for everyone in an individual health insurance plan, you can only make changes, or enroll in a new plan, during Open Enrollment, from November 15th thru February 15th.   Kinda like tax season is for accountants, it creates a wild ride for brokers all across the USA. Here are a few funny quotes Alison and Her Helper Elves heard during Open Enrollment: “I’m sorry I’m losing my motor

PPO, HMO, or EPO? What’s in a name?!

What’s with the alphabet soup?  What’s it all mean?  How will it inform your choices? Understanding the differences in these 3 plan types is essential in understanding health insurance in this new wacky market. HMO Say your toe hurts and you’re on an HMO (aka Health Maintenance Organization.)  Where do you go first, the podiatrist?  WRONG!  With an HMO, you have to get prior approval and referral to a specialist from your PCP (Primary Care Physician.)   And, there are NO
