What does it cost to…

… die?   It’s expensive!  Cedars Sinai Medical Center billed Medicare $132,000 (yes!) for ONE week of care.    I don’t want this to be morose but I do want to use my father’s death a couple of months ago as a life lesson about how to be pro-active in your own medical care. The doctors wanted to… Continue reading What does it cost to…

Non-Grandfathered Plan

If you bought your health insurance after 3/23/10 or made any changes at all to a plan you bought before 3/23/10, you have a Non-Grandfathered Plan.   It must meet the requirements of the federal reform laws known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).

Grandfathered Plans

If you bought your health insurance before 3/23/10 and haven’t made any changes to it since, you have a Grandfathered Plan.   It does not have to meet the requirements of the federal reform laws known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).

Shortly after the reform law was enacted on 3/23/10, the insurance companies stopped accepting applications for children only (the explanation is long and boring, but if you want to know the back story… Continue reading Children, children, children… Pay Attention!

Scrambled Eggs and Mashed Potatoes!

That’s how my brains feel!   It’s been several months since I’ve been here, but there has been SO much going on in the wacky world of health insurance and health care reform I’m having trouble keeping up with it.    I’m having even more trouble filtering it all down so that I can make some sense… Continue reading Scrambled Eggs and Mashed Potatoes!

Can I Exchange This?

If you’re in California, then please sit up and pay attention ’cause this one’s for YOU! The new federal “stealth” care reform laws specify that by 1/1/14, health insurance “exchanges” in every state must be implemented.  The exchanges will allegedly be designed as a health insurance online mall, giving consumers better tools to compare and… Continue reading Can I Exchange This?
