Aetna Bites The Dust

Did you  know?  If you are in California and have an individual health insurance policy with Aetna, you are being abandoned on January 1, 2014.   Because of certain provisions in ObamaCare (aka The Affordable Care Act aka ACA), Aetna has decided to get out of the California individual market (can anyone say “profit margin”?) and focus only on employer-sponsored plans.

You are one of approximately 50,000 who will be left to figure it out on your own.    Aren’t you relieved that The Insurance Mom is here to help you!?  What ever will you do?

Fortunately, by the end of this year there’ll be lots of options but you’ll need help to figure them all out.   This health care reform stuff is confusing!    The Insurance Mom is a phone call or an e-mail away.  Let me know your FAQs!

  1. Hi Allison,
Just wanted to let you know that I’ve been with Pacificare (part of UHC)for almost two years and paying a fortune. I received a letter that they too are leaving California and dumping me!
My dad is 81 and with Healthnet. They are cancelling his policy and offering a different one for double the cost! So the seniors we should be looking out for are also taking a beating! I’ll be calling you.

    1. Hi Carol…

Yes, United Health Care announced their departure from CA right after Aetna. While both companies will still be in CA for group business (employers), they will no longer be insuring individuals/families.

However, there are quite a few reasonable options available for you. Just don’t wait for the last minute. Take care of this. If you want more info, you know where to find The Insurance Mom!

As for your 81 year old dad, I imagine that he is insured in HealthNet’s Medicare Supplement plan. Maybe it’s a Medicare Advantage plan? Many of these plans are being cancelled, but that has nothing to do with the Affordable Care Act. If it is a Medicare Advantage plan then he can enroll in any other Medicare Supplement during this open enrollment period until 12/7/13.
